Almost Four Years...
Almost four years since my first post. Time is fucking flying. My wife recently prodded me to join a writing group at our local library, and we just held our 4th group the other night. Joining this group has energized my desire to write, even if only a few tidbits of things the group leader uses to challenge us.
He also encouraged me (us) to put something out for all to read and critique, and although hesitant at first, I submitted a short story in two parts. Our next session sometime in February will give the group a chance to offer their commentary, something I'm a bit apprehensive about but looking forward to at the same time.
I know me, and it'll be a struggle to keep myself from taking things personally. I think I'm ready for it, though.
How do you handle "constructive" criticism? Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.
I don't mind constructive criticism as long as the person peppers in some kind words. It's not difficult for me and shouldn't be for others, either.
ReplyDeleteMy worst experience came from a paid mentorship which drained all the money earned from my published (!) short story. And all J. Buchanan replied was, "Tell yourself you don't suck." and "Show, don't tell."
This halted my writing for well over a year. This person may well have suffered issues at the time yet it's not easy to forget. I wish you all the best.
Awesome news to hear about the writing group. I hope it continues to energize and inspire you. One of the things that held me back from writing a book was the criticism I would receive from folks that can be quite mean. I eventually talked myself into writing a book by telling myself that most of these people didn't do what I did and make themselves feel better by taking shots at those who accomplished what they wish they could. Hope that helps.
DeleteTry to remain objective about people's suggestions. Will the suggestion improve your story? Then consider doing it. Will it not improve your story? Then don't make that change. Remember these are all just suggestions, not orders.
